Standard Pallet Sizes

The table below lists every standard pallet size commonly used in North America. All dimensions are in inches (Length x Width). Weight capacities are approximate and depend on pallet construction, wood species, moisture content, and grade.

Understanding Load Capacities

Dynamic Load: The maximum weight a pallet can carry while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. This is the most commonly referenced capacity.
Static Load: The maximum weight a pallet can support while sitting stationary on a flat, solid surface. Always higher than dynamic load.
Racking Load: The maximum weight a pallet can hold when supported only at its edges on pallet racking beams. This is the most demanding load scenario.
Sector Recommendations

Pallet Sizes by Industry

Different industries have standardized around specific pallet sizes to optimize their supply chains. Here is what each sector typically uses and why.

Grocery & Retail

48 x 40 (GMA)

The grocery industry relies almost exclusively on the 48x40 GMA pallet. Two of these pallets fit side by side in a standard 96-inch trailer, maximizing freight efficiency. Nearly every grocery warehouse, distribution center, and retail store is designed around this size.

Pharmaceutical

48 x 40 or 40 x 40

Pharmaceutical operations typically use 48x40 or 40x40 pallets. Clean-room environments demand Grade A or new pallets to meet FDA and cGMP requirements. Heat-treated pallets are mandatory for international shipments of pharmaceutical products.

Automotive

48 x 45

The automotive industry favors the slightly wider 48x45 pallet to accommodate the dimensions of car parts, engines, and components. This size is standardized across most North American auto manufacturers and their supply chains.

Chemical & Petroleum

42 x 42 or 48 x 48

Chemical drums and barrels require square pallets for stable stacking. The 42x42 handles standard 55-gallon drums in a tight four-drum configuration, while the 48x48 provides extra overhang room and is preferred for heavier chemical containers.

Beverage

48 x 36 or 48 x 48

Beverage companies use 48x36 pallets for bottled and canned goods, or 48x48 for kegs and larger containers. The compact 48x36 is especially popular for shrink-wrapped beverage cases because it minimizes overhang while maximizing trailer utilization.

Aerospace & Defense

60 x 48 or Custom

Aerospace components often exceed standard pallet dimensions. Oversized 60x48 or 72x48 pallets are common, and many applications require custom-built pallets engineered for specific load shapes and weight distributions.

Global Standards

International Pallet Sizes

If you ship internationally, you may need pallets that conform to European, Asian, or Australian standards. All international pallets require ISPM-15 heat treatment certification for wood packaging material crossing borders.

ISPM-15 Compliance Note: All wood pallets used in international shipping must comply with ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15). This requires heat treatment to a core temperature of 56°C for 30 minutes and proper stamping by a certified facility. Pallet Colorado offers ISPM-15 heat treatment for all pallet sizes. Decision Guide

How to Choose the Right Pallet Size

01

Measure Your Product Footprint

Start with the dimensions of the product or packaging you need to ship. The pallet should be at least as large as your product footprint. Slight overhang (up to 1 inch) is generally acceptable, but significant overhang creates a hazard during forklift handling and racking.

02

Calculate Total Load Weight

Determine the total weight of the product you will place on the pallet, including all packaging materials. Compare this against the dynamic load capacity (for pallets being moved), static load capacity (for pallets in storage), and racking load capacity (for pallets on racking beams). Always leave at least a 20 percent safety margin.

03

Consider Your Trailer and Racking

Standard North American trailers are 96 inches wide and 53 feet long. The 48x40 GMA pallet is designed to fit two across (80 inches) with room for airflow. If you use a different pallet size, verify it fits your trailer and racking system efficiently. Wasted space means higher shipping costs per unit.

04

Check Industry Standards

Many industries have standardized around specific pallet sizes. Using the industry-standard size ensures compatibility with your customers' warehouses, reduces handling issues, and often qualifies you for lower shipping rates. See our industry-specific recommendations above.

05

Evaluate Entry Requirements

Think about how forklifts and pallet jacks will access the pallet in your warehouse. If you need flexibility to approach from any direction, choose a four-way entry pallet. For simpler operations, a two-way pallet saves money. Review our pallet types guide for details on entry configurations.
